Courses and Research Interest

After spending more than 31 years in Industrial Research, I retired and decided to return to my alma mater to teach. I am really enjoying this new experience and, along with my family, am re-discovering how terrific it is to live in the Philippines. As my resume shows I am very interested (some say obsessed) with Innovation and Technology and how we Filipinos need to create new products and services and contribute great new ideas to the community of innovators worldwide.

This semester I teach two sections of the Innovation and Technology course with Engr. No Guico. This class is aimed at young technologists who are joining the Ateneo research community. We focus on gaining an understanding of the hot new technologies like growing algae for oil, disaster monitoring using wireless sensors, and Web 2.0 Social Networking and study how these technologies change the competitive landscape. I am constantly amazed at how well our students performed, when challenged to think critically about new ideas and to fashion a creative solution to pressing problems. At Ateneo we involve our undergraduates in faculty research projects. I find this a very exciting part of being in the Ateneo, since the students are being given a chance to innovate, to discover something new, and to even conceptualize a new business or start-up company. I am co-advisor with other faculty members and Industry researchers in a variety of research teams - Biomedical Devices for Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation, Tropical Rain Measurements for Disaster Monitoring, Smart Solar Energy Systems, Algae for Oil, Clean Water Systems and Video Steganography. Go to our Research Website to see the details of the research projects. http://ohm.ecce.admu.edu.ph/wiki/bin/view/Main/ResearchProjects

I also teach Research Seminar for M.S. ECE with Dr. Nathaniel Libatique. In this class we channel the attention of the M.S. students towards significant research problems for their thesis. With graduate students who have done excellent undergraduate thesis projects pursuing their M.S. degree, we build on their undergraduate work, while deepening their understanding of modern research methods. Our approach is to get them doing their thesis project early in their graduate courses, we find this to be far more productive than the conventional graduate curriculum. Go to our Graduate course website to see the class presentations, research presentations and thesis plans of the students.

We are in the process of finalizing the new Ateneo Innovation Center. The Innovation Center is organized so that Ateneo researchers can join together to attack some of the toughest multi-disciplinary problems facing the Philippines today. Problems like disaster monitoring, clean water to remote areas, personal medical databases, new biofuels, wireless logistics for agriculture, and regenerative medicine require the skills of chemists, physicists, biologists, mathematicians, and engineers. The Innovation Center brings Industrial researchers into our research teams, so they can help our research make a fast transition to commercialization. In short, the mission of the Ateneo Innovation is to put these exciting multi-disciplinary projects directly in the critical path of the Industry's needs. Thus the Center will foster technology collaborative, multi-disciplinary research at the nexus of R&D and commercialization. We are privileged to have the participation of partners like the Manila Observatory, Smart Communications, Alsons Aquaculture, SunPower Corp. Philippines, IMI Inc. Philippines, Ionics, Inc., Circuit Solutions, Trend Micro, PhilBIO?, and Japan Radio Corporation.
