Innovation and Technology Class for Ateneo Students

Innovations and Technology Class

The Innovation Center offers Ateneo students classes in Innovation and Technology to upper classmen in science and technology. The class focuses on how technology drives most new businesses and how it is becoming indispensable for young scientists to know how technological changes occur as part of a business strategy. By focusing on the entrepreneurial aspects of bringing high technology devices, materials, communication services, biomedical devices and subsystems and social networking to market, the students learn to appreciate the role of techno-entrepreneurs in developing the Philippines. Non-technical students are also allowed to participate in the class, so they learn more about technology based businesses.

To this end the students read articles from The Economist, IEEE Spectrum, MIT Technology Review, Scientific American and even research papers. The students present their finding in short, direct to the point presentations (4 charts/4 minutes typically) that answer the following questions: What is the science behind this new development, Is there a big business opportunity and a large market for this innovation, and lastly, but very importantly, what can we do in the Philippines with these new idea or approach to commercialization?

Most of the students do a research thesis during this period, and the class also focuses on developing an insight into the applications off their research work. These same questions are asked by the students about their own research projects, so as to shape and define the overall goals of their works and to find industry partners interested in furthering their work.

The class reads several of the top Innovation and Technology readings like The Post American Challenge by Zakariah, Groundswell by Li and Bernoff, Founders at Work by Livingston, Wikinomics, and the World is Flat by Friedman. In these readings the students read and present the different chapters as a group, while applying the readings to proposed businesses exploiting some new technologies.

The Syllabus and reading list, Student Profiles, Class Lectures and Student presentations are available online at WEBSITE. We encourage you to click here and check the class out.

If your organization would like Ateneo Innovation speakers to present talks on their research, please contact the Innovation Center, for assistance. We also encourage you to contact the researchers directly.
